100% mulberry silk, plied, 100g/800m (875 yd), lace weight. Recommended needle size: 2,5 – 3,5 mm Cold handwash recommended. Mulberry silk is the highest quality silk you can purchase. It is made from silkworms that are raised in captivity under exacting conditions. It is also the most expensive type of silk. Because the silkworms of the Bombyx mori moth are fed only mulberry leaves, the resulting silk is some of the finest available in the world. Pure white in colour and made up of individual long fibres, Mulberry silk is more refined than other types of silk. The best silk cocoons are used for reeling top quality yarn. The residual silk from the reeling operation is sold as throwster’s waste and silk carrier rods. Cocoons that are not good enough for reeling are degummed and either made into silk hankies or they are carded and made into silk tops which can be spun like wool. The leftovers of the carding process are the silk noils, which can be used to add texture to handspun yarns. The resulting mulberry silk thread is the strongest natural fiber in the world, making it incredibly durable. A silk fiber the same diameter as a fiber of steel is stronger than the steel.
